I'm Amalia Phillips, a ceramicist and designer, and I've recently completed the Master’s degree in Ceramics at the University of Staffordshire. With a background in Product Design, having achieved a First-Class Honours degree from Nottingham Trent University, my work blends traditional processes with a contemporary approach to surface, form, and material. My practice focuses on the expressive possibilities of terracotta and slip decoration, often exploring rhythm, gesture, and texture through wheel-thrown forms.
In addition to my studio practice, I worked at deVOL Kitchens in the Ceramics Production team. I was involved in the whole ceramic process from slip-casting and fettling to glazing and kiln operation, using porcelain, stoneware, and earthenware. I was particularly involved in spray glazing tiles (managing the production of the Cream Subway tiles during my time) and making teapots, platters, as well as extruding tiles to a high standard, which deepened my understanding of surface, consistency, and production flow.
Through apmpdesign, I share process-focused ceramic work. You can follow more behind-the-scenes work and current projects on Instagram: @apmpdesign.
In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors in nature, whether that’s walking my dogs, longboarding, or cycling. Spending time outside not only helps me relax but also serves as a major source of inspiration for my ceramic work.
I am of both Czech and English nationality, and I love visiting the Moravian Mountains or paddleboarding on the lakes when I have the chance to see my family. These experiences deepen my connection to the landscapes that influence my practice.
